Every year around November, parents and partners start asking me: "What should I get for the pianist in my life?" Here are my recommendations, tested through years of teaching.

Under €50: Accessories That Matter

A good metronome. Yes, there are free apps, but a physical metronome on the piano stand changes practice habits. The Korg MA-2 (around €20) is reliable and simple. Sheet music they'll actually play. Skip the "100 Classical Favorites" compilations. Ask their teacher what they're working on and find the next book in that series. A piano lamp. Good lighting makes a real difference in reading sheet music. An LED desk lamp with adjustable brightness is practical and thoughtful.

€400–600: The Beginner's Dream

If someone in your life has been talking about learning piano, the Yamaha P-45 is the gift that changes everything. It's the most-recommended beginner piano among Hamburg music teachers for good reason.

€600–900: The Upgrade

For students who've been playing for a year or more on a basic keyboard, the Roland FP-30X is a meaningful upgrade. The improved sound and Bluetooth connectivity make practice sessions more enjoyable.
